9 Toll Plazas

Butterworth has many records. Having 9 toll plazas is one such record. Ironically there is NO toll plaza on Penang Island. Even if you are coming from Penang Island to Butterworth using the Penang Bridge is FREE. So you guys who stay in Penang Island are very lucky.

The lastest addition was the Sg Nyior Toll Plaza opened on 1 Sept 2007 on an existing old road used for more than 15 years. Check the petition.

Other tolls in mainland Butterworth are:-

1. Jawi
2. Bukit Tambun
3. Juru
4. Penang Bridge
5. Perai
6. Bagan Ajam
7. Sg Dua
8. Sg Nyior
9. Kubang Semang

Anyway, i think you did some minor mistake that Juru, Tambun, Perai is Butterworth...mmm... Actually Butterworth only partial of Seberang Perai Utara. While Juru is belong to Seberang Perai Tengah.

Guan Eng pledges to fulfil election promises
2008/05/20
NST online

BUTTERWORTH: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the joint DAP-PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) state government would continue to keep its election promises to the people.

To prove he meant business, he said the state had written to the federal government to abolish the Sungai Nyior toll at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road. He has also raised the issue in Parliament on numerous occasions.

"We are doing our best. However, it will take us some time to resolve the matter.

"After all, this is under the purview of the federal government. We will try to do it before the next general election," he said after attending Wesak Day celebrations at the Butterworth Buddhist Association at Mak Mandin here yesterday.

Also present were state executive councillors Lim Hock Seng and Phee Boon Poh and the association's chairman Phee Boon Chong.

Guan Eng was responding to accusations that the new state government had failed to deliver on its election promises.

The DAP, in its election manifesto, had promised to abolish the Sungai Nyior toll along the RM700 million highway, implemented in September 2006, if it came into power.

Vehicles using the stretch from Seberang Jaya and here are charged between 50 sen and RM1.90.

Since 2004, residents living in the surrounding vicinity and in Seberang Jaya had protested against the toll as many of them use the stretch several times a day.

As reported in the Star,

On a different matter, Lim said the state was prepared to construct a pair road linking Jalan Bagan 29 to a flyover in Jalan Jelawat, Seberang Jaya provided the Federal Government gave its assurance not take legal action against the state.

“This pair road would be an ideal alternative to those who want to avoid paying toll at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza.

“However, the highway’s concession holder can sue us for ‘leakage’ of traffic from the toll plaza area due to this pair road,” he said.

Lim said the cost to construct this road stretch was estimated at RM14mil.
