BKE - Butterworth Kulim Expressway

Konsortium Lebuhraya Butterworth-Kulim (KLBK) Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of MMC Corporation Berhad was awarded the privatization of Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) for a concession period of 32 years (June 1994 to June 2026, including 2 years construction period) to design, construct, manage, operate and maintain the highway of dual two lane carriageway with separate motorcycle tracks and related highway facilities. This 16.78 km carriageway from Butterworth is a vital link for Penang, Kedah, East Coast and Thailand.

The highway has shorten traveling time between Butterworth and Grik to 1½ hours. It serves as a faster route to the interior of northern Peninsular Malaysia namely Pengkalan Hulu, Thailand and connecting to the East-West Highway to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

There are two toll booths - Kubang Semang Toll Plaza and Lunas Toll Plaza. Both tolls collect RM1.30 per way (update Nov 2007).

PLUS to buy toll highway

KUALA LUMPUR: PLUS Expressways Bhd has proposed to acquire the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) from MMC Corp Bhd for RM134mil cash.
The dual lane 17-km carriageway was first opened to traffic on Nov 15, 1996 and the concession would expire in 2026.

The deal was expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.
PLUS also announced yesterday that it had completed the acquisition of two toll-highways - Expressway Lingkaran Tengah Sdn Bhd and Linkedua (M) Bhd - from UEM Group Bhd for RM866mil.
