BUTTERWORTH: More days in a week will be designated “No Plastic Bags Day” in Penang.

But Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government would first have to gauge public response towards the move, which begins today.

Every Monday is “No Plastic Bags Day,” for now.

“We will look at the response before deciding when to increase the number of days,” he told reporters after launching Tesco’s Green Bags at Tesco Extra Seberang Jaya, near here, yesterday.

Every Monday, consumers will be charged 20 sen per plastic bag at participating shopping outlets in the state. The proceeds will be donated to the state’s Partners Against Poverty (PAP) Programme. More than 250 outlets have reportedly pledged their support for the campaign.

Earlier in his speech, Lim commended Tesco Malaysia for introducing a new range of its famous “Bag for Life” that encourages customers to reuse their bags.

These come in two designs - The Big Green Bag and the Natural Green Bag, the latter made of jute.

Lim said Tesco’s Green Clubcard Points scheme to thank customers for reusing their carrier bags had helped the hypermarket save on over one million bags since its launch in May last year.
