The Penang Bridge with a lenght of 13.5 km is among the longest bridges in the world. It is a dual-carriageway that connects Penang Island to Butterworth. It was officially opened to traffic on 14 September 1985. Penang Bridge is the longest bridge in Malaysia and it is a national landmark. It is managed by PLUS Expressway Berhad.
A toll of RM7 for car is to be paid when crossing the bridge from Butterworth to Penang Island. There is no charge on the return trip.
An expansion from 4 lanes to 6 lanes to accommodate the increasing traffic on the bridge is underway and due to complete at the end of 2008.
A second link has been built near Batu Kawan to Penang Island under the Ninth Malaysia Plan and due to be completed at the end of 2010.
