Oil storage depots found in Butterworth were set up more than a 100 years ago. There are two depots - the Shell and Esso depots. They are very near to the sea ports, industrial estates and busy shipping lane of Penang's strait.
The Esso depot is beside the Shell depot.
Ship loading and unloading fuel can be seen when you board the ferry to Penang from Butterworth.
