THE Gymnasium Rakyat in Jalan Pantai, Butterworth, may not be a first-class facility but enough for weight watchers in the North Seberang Prai district to shed that extra pounds on their tummy.

The gym, which was renovated at the cost of RM230,000, overlooks the Butterworth Outer Ring Road and the waterfront and provides the perfect place for the health conscious to tone up their muscles for a mere RM20 monthly.

All they need to do is join as a member and pay a membership fee of RM45 each.

The public can use the bicycles and weight machines available at the two-storey bungalow. Students are given a half price discount.

Youth and Sports Ministry director-general Datuk Fathul Razi Bakri, who launched the district fitness carnival-cum-community gym yesterday, said sports infrastructure such as gyms, sports complexes and games courts should be made available to all.

“The ministry would like to get the people to be more involved in sports as it would help increase their fitness level.

“Based on a study conducted by the ministry in 2005, only about 18% of the population is actively involved in sports.

“We hope to increase the rate to 50% by 2010,” he said after launching the gym.

The ministry spent another RM170,000 to buy the equipment and they gym has two instructors to assist the members.

Gym chairman Hashim Nanyan said one should not view the gym as a place for body-builders only because they too could benefit from the facilities available.

“A gym is a place for people to build up their endurance in sports activities. Taking weights is a form of exercise and stamina building.

“Students and associations training for a sporting event should take the opportunity to train here as the gym charges reasonable rates for its membership,” he said.

During the launching of the carnival, a host of activities such as arm wrestling and wall climbing were held.

The crowd was also given a chance to try out the gym equipment with the help of the instructors.
